FLASH is a transdisciplinary research initiative that explores how climate-vulnerable peri-urban communities can build resilient, inclusive, and sustainable livelihoods in the face of growing environmental and socio-economic challenges. Grounded in Ostrom’s Social-Ecological Systems framework, FLASH examines the dynamic interactions among ecological conditions, livelihoods, social systems, infrastructure, health, and institutions. Through a convergent and sequential mixed-methods approach, FLASH brings together researchers, communities, local institutions, and other stakeholders through Living Labs, creating spaces where knowledge is co-produced and locally tailored solutions are developed, tested, and refined. In coastal Bangladesh, four climate-vulnerable peri-urban communities serve as Living Labs, anchored in local educational institutions and co-led by community stakeholders and the FLASH consortium.

The project brings together six complementary research areas—from climate hazards, inclusive economies, housing and infrastructure, WASH and health, and climate governance to the Livelihood System Lab, which integrates evidence across these areas to co-develop and test adaptive livelihood strategies. By connecting scientific research with local knowledge, stakeholder collaboration, and data-driven innovation, FLASH aims to generate practical solutions that strengthen community resilience while creating pathways for just, sustainable, and dignified futures in a changing climate.
